Breast Tomosynthesis utilizes a familiar radiology concept in an innovative new way. It allows us to see breast cancers on Mammography that were previously hidden on routine Mammography A description of the methodology and development of the technique are discussed, as well as the steps in producing and displaying Tomosynthesis images. A comparison to routine Mammography and other breast imaging techniques are included, as well as other advantages and indications.
The current published data showing the increased invasive cancer detection rate, and decreased recall rate with Tomosynthesis screening, are reviewed. In addition, some of the challenges associated with Tomosynthesis, including the increased radiation dose and increase in interpretation time presently required with this technique, are addressed.
